Why compost?

Over 1 billion (with a b!) metric tonnes of food is wasted every year and a lot of that ends up in landfills. It’s terribly wasteful, but it’s also terrible for the environment – 8% of greenhouse gas emissions come from food waste. But composting can help make a big difference. These compostable bags make it easier to keep food waste out of landfills, allowing it to break down and turn back into useful organic matter. Amazing!

But do they work?

We believe making better choices for Mama Earth shouldn’t be a burden, so we made sure these bags come with no compromises. They’re sturdy, strong and easy to use. We’ve done multiple rounds of testing so they can stand up to the challenge of a small commune’s worth of food waste.

While many Canadian municipalities have green bin or organics collection programs, not all of them accept certified compostable plastics, including food scrap bags. Some facilities are equipped to process them, while others are not. Always check with your local facility before disposing of your food scrap bag in your green bin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these bags expensive?

Nope! We’ve priced these bags to make sure we are competitive on a cost per bag basis. We also made sure there are more bags per roll as this was something our customers told us was important to them.

Can I use these bags for waste going to the landfill too?

Please don’t! Since landfills are designed to prevent biodegradation, recycled plastic is the most sustainable option for anything going there. Recycled plastic has the least impact in terms of sourcing and production and doesn’t break down anaerobically, helping to reduce methane.

Have you ever slipped on a banana peel?

Yes! It actually happens! It’s a dangerous situation that’s not funny at all and really highlights why properly disposing of your food scraps is so important. Seriously! Stop laughing!
